Kyuden Bayushi, the Month of the Boar
Although the Winter Court of the Emperor was normally convened at least a month earlier, sometimes even longer, there was little in recent memory that could match the fanfare associated with the convening of the first Winter Court of the Divine Empress Iweko I. Her ascension to the throne only weeks behind her, the Empress had apparently instructed her Imperial Advisor to make all the arrangements on the day of her coronation, and Bayushi Hisoka had gladly complied. For all that the announcement of its location had come only days ago, it appeared as though the great palace of the Scorpion Clan had been in preparation for this event for months.

The Crane
The section of Kyuden Doji that served as the personal quarters for the Crane Champion was decorated in an elegant manner, with the furnishings, floral arrangements and wall scrolls carefully chosen to reflect both the lady’s personality and the wealth of her clan. Doji Kusari ignored it all as he made his way through the rooms — they told him nothing that he did not already know, and thus were of no account.

The Crab
The Crab Embassy in Toshi Ranbo matched Kamui’s mental picture of it. It was not large, but it was very solidly built. It looked more like a blockhouse than a diplomatic residence, which was appropriate since the Crab delegation was not generally known for their diplomatic skills. Kamui rapped on the outer door and waited for a response. He did not expect the one he got.
A voice bellowed from within the embassy, “What are you waiting for? The kami to herald your arrival? Get in here!”

The Mantis
The Mantis Estates in the Imperial City could be politely described as opulent, perhaps even lavish. Many in Toshi Ranbo eschewed politeness on this particular subject, however, and instead used words like “ostentatious,” “shameful,” or even “disgusting.” It was the last one that entertained Yoritomo Sachina the most. Given her unique background, having spent most of her life as one of the most successful geisha in the Empire despite her noble birth, she understood very well that no matter how much a samurai claimed to despise wealth and commerce, he depended upon such things to live. Whether the dichotomy existed as a result of hypocrisy or delusion varied from person to person, but the result was the same: it was easy to manipulate someone who did not know or refused to acknowledge the truth.

Fealty and Freedom
(172 pages, softbound)
We are not the footnotes of history. We follow in the footsteps of heroes. – Toturi Kyoji
While the Great Clans are the Emerald Empire’s most obvious movers of great events, they are not the only ones. Since the Dawn of the Empire, the Emperor has retained the right to create Minor Clans as reward to those who have served with great distinction. The Imperial Families – the Seppun, the Otomo, and the Miya – have devoted their lives to serving the Imperial Throne directly, and although they are small compared to the Great Clan families, the pride they take in their role as the Emperor’s own retained servants makes up for their lack of numbers. And ronin, though despised as “wave-men” are always useful to their betters as freelance soldiers and are on occasion important parts of the social order.
