Emperor Edition Special: Demo Decks

This article is the first in a series of two detailing the Emperor Edition launch program. Before we tackle the specifics of the Launch Event in a subsequent article, let us talk about the brand new Emperor Edition demo decks.

GenCon Indy 2011 marked the introduction – to the great pleasure of our fans – of the Emperor Edition demo decks.
Players – existing and new alike – were lining up at our booth to discover the re-editions and the new cards that would be introduced in Emperor Edition later this year. The anticipation was in each pair of eyes and players just could not wait to start playing L5R.

But a new Edition – and demo decks in particular – cannot be introduced to the public solely at conventions, which is why we have created a Demo Deck Package that has been sent to stores all over the world. We can only hope the same anticipation that was shown at GenCon will be showcased at stores when they open their package and start scheduling their demo sessions and are counting on everyone to make it a reality.

Here is a brief rundown of the kit itself and how we believe you – the existing player – can contribute to the demo program.

Each Stronghold Store, based on its level, will receive in December a package containing Emperor Edition legal demo decks for all 9 Clans. The larger the existing community, the bigger the number of decks your store will get.

Those decks are primarily sent to the stores to grow a player base for Legend of the Five Rings and as such are aimed at getting new players to play the game so the community in your store thrives. To that effect, the demo decks are made exclusively of EE legal Common and Uncommon cards – easy to understand and easy to obtain through other means.

At the same time, we fully understand that the recruitment of the new players happens because of the passion of existing players – a passion L5R fans are known for – and acknowledge that fact by letting you pick one EE demo deck under one very simple condition: That you agree to teach a potential new player the game.

In essence, we simply ask of you that you do not deplete the demo deck stock of your store for personal purpose (you will easily get the cards included in them through your regular purchase of product) and help your local store in teaching the game to new players, growing your community in the process.

We hope that you will enjoy those demo decks as much as we enjoyed creating them for all players and are looking forward to the new blood this program will bring to our community thanks to our joined effort.

You can also download the decklists of the demo decks if you wish to replicate them with your own stock of cards after Emperor Edition launches.

Nicolas is the Brand Manager of the Legend of the Five Rings CCG. He has been playing L5R since Imperial Edition. His first purchase was a Phoenix starter but he quickly traded for a Crane one and has never looked back, even though playing corrupt Crane since Gold Edition has led him to giving Shadowlands and Spider a try on various occasions.
