CE 15 MRPs

With the last batch of errata, there were a few odds and ends we still wanted to resolve, but they were not deemed essential to occur before the Kotei season. We decided to hold some of them off until CE 15. Here are the MRP’s you will see in CE 15. Any part of the card not listed remains unchanged. These will go into effect with the release of CE 15.

The following cards are all receiving a minor, technical change to fix small rules loopholes.

Shikibu no Oni
Before an action destroys Shikibu: Negate the destruction. If the destruction fails, choose one of your Personalities at Shikubu’s location; he is consumed by Jigoku. Remove the chosen Personality from the game.

Gutobo
Recon Open: Target a province. Before this turn ends, bring into play each dead Goblin Personality you own who was destroyed this turn during a Combat Segment whose battlefield was at that province, ignoring Gold Costs.

Kata of the Concealed Blade
Kata
Limited: Put this card into play in your home. Discard any other Kata cards you control. While this card remains in play, you have the ability, “Battle: Attach a target Weapon from your hand to your target Personality.”

Kata of the North Wind
Kata
Limited: Put this card into play in your home. Discard any other Kata cards you control. While this card remains in play, you have the ability, “Battle: Bow a Weapon attached to your performing personality: Straighten him.”

Phantom Blade Kata
Kata • Spirit
Limited: Put this card into play in your home. Discard any other Kata cards you control. While this card remains in play, you have the ability, “Spirit Limited: Discard a card: Create a +2F Spirit • Weapon Item and attach it to your target Personality.”

Unexpected Intimidation
Battle: Bow your target Personality: Move a target enemy Personality home. If this movement fails, bow him. If this bowing fails, destroy him. If this destruction fails, remove him from the game.

Consuming the Flesh has simply been more powerful than we had anticipated and has caused many scenarios where a player’s first 2 or 3 actions in a battle are canceled. It also has a negligible cost (bowing the card) that has been increased.

Consuming the Flesh
Maho • Singular
Reaction: After another player’s action targets one of your Personalities in your current army, destroy the Personality and bow this Shugenja: The action’s effects do not happen. Create a 2F/2C/0PH Shadowlands • Undead Personality at the current battlefield. Lose 3 Honor.

Besieged Borderland simply gave out far too much unopposed force. It was also unclear on how it worked if you had no clan alignment.

Besieged Borderland
Battle: Bow this card: Give each opposed non-Unique Personality that do not share a Clan alignment with you in your current army +2F.

In a rare powering up of cards, the following two cards are receiving small changes to better match their design intent. Black Heart, Red Blades can now move home bowed Ninjas, making it the evacuation card it was always meant to be. Kyuden Hida now works with traits and delayed effects that attach followers from your hand, such as Secluded Outpost.

Black Hearts, Red Blade
Battle: Target two of your Ninja Personalities without non-Ninja Followers: Move them home. If both of them moved, discard any cards in the current battlefield’s province and draw two cards.

Kyuden Hida
Reaction: After you attach a Follower from your hand: Draw a card.

********

Explicit Performing. The Plague War introduces a new form of wording for many actions. In addition to the rulebook’s existing rules for performing, actions are now also performed by a Personality or Follower if they explicitly mention that card as “performing.”

Examples of the new wording are “Choose your performing Monk” or “Bow your performing Follower.” Both involve a choice of performer; in the second example, you have to choose a Follower to bow. Choosing a performer happens during the Required Targeting step of the action, before any targeting in the action. Choosing a performer is not itself targeting.

Going forward from The Plague War, explicit performing will replace the “targeting in constraints block” way of showing performing in card wordings, although the constraints block rule will remain, and pre-Plague War cards will still work in the same way.

We introduced this change to make performing easier to figure out, and to pave the way for changes to the rules in future base sets that will make L5R actions play out more intuitively. We decided to give everyone a taste of what is to come by reprinting the applicable strongholds with the new performing templating. It should be noted that Fields of the Dead was updated to no longer be performed.

Dragon Guard’s City
Battle/Open: Choose your performing Personality: Attach a target Follower in your hand or discard pile to him.

Fields of the Dead
Maho Limited: If there is a Personality in a discard pile, pay 3 Gold: Create a 2F/2C/0PH Shadowlands • Undead Personality.

Seven Folds Palace
Political Open: Choose your performing Personality with 1 Personal Honor or higher: Take the Imperial Favor.

Shiro Daidoji
Battle: Even if this card is bowed, bow your performing Personality: Ranged Attack with strength equal to his Force. Gain 2 Honor.

The Field of the Winds
Battle: Even if this card is bowed, bow your performing Cavalry Follower: Target a unit opposing the Follower. Move your Follower’s unit, or the enemy unit, home or to a battlefield where it would be opposed.

Utaku Plains
Battle: Choose your performing Personality: Reduce the Force of a target enemy Personality or Follower by your Personality’s Personal Honor.

Venerable Plains of the Ikoma
Battle: Choose your unbowed performing Personality and discard a card: Bow a target enemy Personality with lower Personal Honor. Gain 2 Honor if you discarded a Bushido Virtue.

While this list of changes might have seemed long, there are actually only two cards being changed to lower their power and two cards are being changed to slightly increase their power to match designer intent. Most of these cards are receiving small, technical changes, which should not affect everyday playing.
