L5R has several tournament legalities. These legalities are determined by the most recently release base set. The current base set is Twenty Festivals, as such, the following formats are legal for standard constructed tournament play:

  • Twenty Festivals Strict – Any cards printed in the Twenty Festivals Base set plus any card with Black Legality Bug printed in Thunderous Acclaim, Evil Portents and The Blackest Storm.
  • Twenty Festivals Arc – Any cards printed in the Twenty Festivals Base set plus any card with a Blue Legality Bug printed in Ivory Edition, The Coming Storm, A Line in the Sand, The New Order, Thunderous Acclaim, Evil Portents and The Blackest Storm.
  • Twenty Festivals Extended – Any cards printed in the Twenty Festivals Base set plus any card with a Purple Legality Bug printed in Coils of Madness, Gates of Chaos, Aftermath, Ivory Edition, The Coming Storm, A Line in the Sand, The New Order, Thunderous Acclaim, Evil Portents and The Blackest Storm.

Legality Bugs are found in either the bottom left or right corners of the L5R cards. For example, IE Part 2 Bug is the Blue Legality Bug and it is found in the bottom right corner of cards in those sets.

All 3 standard constructed formats share the same banned list:

  • Advanced Warning
  • Cavalry Escort
  • Exotic Farmlands
  • Well-defended Farm

In addition to the standard constructed formats, L5R has two alternative constructed formats listed below:

  • Modern – Any cards printed in Samurai Edition plus all the base sets and expansions printed after this set.
  • Big Deck – Any card printed in any L5R base set and expansion.

These formats have not only a very large number of legal card choices but specific deck construction guidelines unique to their format. Please refer to the most recent Floor Rules for additional information, including a list of any banned cards.
